How to Choose a Solar System in the Maldives

The shortest answer: choose grid-tied solar when the goal is mainly to reduce grid electricity use; choose hybrid when selected loads must continue through outages; and choose off-grid when there is no dependable utility connection. A marine system is a separate application that must integrate with a vessel's existing batteries and charging equipment.

Grid-tied solar

A grid-tied inverter works with the utility supply and normally stops during a grid outage for anti-islanding safety. It is often the simplest architecture where a stable grid is available and backup is not required.

Hybrid solar

A hybrid design combines solar, battery storage, and the grid or a generator. Decide which circuits need backup and for how many hours before selecting a battery; backing up every load can change the design and cost substantially.

Off-grid solar

An off-grid system must supply the site's loads without relying on a utility. Load measurement, nighttime use, cloudy-weather autonomy, generator strategy, and future growth matter more than a generic package label. Use our system comparison table as a starting point.

What to Send for an Accurate Solar Quote

A useful solar proposal starts with evidence about the site and its energy use. Send what is available; missing items can be confirmed during the assessment.

  1. Location: island, property, or vessel and the expected installation area.
  2. Energy use: recent electricity bills, interval data if available, or an appliance and operating-hours list.
  3. Site: roof material, approximate usable area, photos, shade, equipment space, and access constraints.
  4. Power sources: utility connection, generator sizes and schedule, existing inverter or battery equipment, and outage pattern.
  5. Backup objective: critical circuits, peak power, expected energy, and required backup hours.
  6. Commercial scope: components only, coordinated supply, or a complete design-and-install project.

Understanding Net Metering in the Maldives

Net metering measures electricity imported from the grid and electricity exported by an approved solar system. The applicable approval process, capacity limit, meter arrangement, export treatment, documents, and billing method depend on the current regulator and utility requirements for the island.

Before treating exported energy as part of a financial estimate, confirm that grid capacity is available, the proposed system is eligible, and the current utility terms have been used. Solar consumed directly at the property and solar exported to the grid may have different financial value.

A standard grid-tied system does not normally provide power during a utility outage. If outage operation matters, the proposal should identify a hybrid or backup architecture and the circuits it will support.

A vessel solar system is constrained by usable area, moving shade, salt and moisture, vibration, wind loading, cable routes, and the existing DC electrical system. Begin with the daily energy needed for lighting, electronics, pumps, navigation equipment, or other intended loads.

Confirm the vessel's battery chemistry, nominal voltage, capacity, charging sources, and allowable charge settings before choosing a controller or inverter. Mounting must remain secure without creating unsafe obstructions, damaging the vessel, or placing equipment where water can collect.

How to Compare Solar Warranties

A long warranty headline is not enough. Read the written terms for the exact model and separate the parties responsible for each part of the system.

  • Product warranty: defects in the panel, inverter, battery, or other equipment, subject to the manufacturer's conditions.
  • Performance warranty: a stated panel-output curve over time; this is not automatically a replacement warranty.
  • Workmanship warranty: the installer's written responsibility for installation work and its exclusions.
  • Battery warranty: may depend on years, throughput, cycles, state of charge, temperature, registration, and operating limits.
  • Claim process: required evidence, labour and freight responsibility, response route, and available remedy.
